CNC Machining of Hard Chromed Taper Pins

The taper pin highlighted here features a hard chromed finish and serves as a brake shoe anchor pin in a heavy transport application. At Glueckler Metal Inc., we were able to produce this part at a quicker rate, providing higher quality than the customers' former supplier, at a reduced cost.


Manufacturing this taper pin involves machining as well as multiple stages of grinding that take place both before and after hardening, induction hardening, and hard chrome plating. Any process misfire results in sizing errors. Our client's previous supplier was performing many unnecessary secondary operations to compensate for problematic chrome taper grinding, and the manufacturing costs were prohibitive. As a TS 16949 compliant manufacturer with similar items already in our product portfolio, the company approached us for a solution.


Using a combination of advanced machining techniques and altering the sequence of the secondary processes enabled us to consistently produce conforming product. Simultaneous machining enabled us to restrict clamping and fixturing error, and we developed a somewhat unconventional multi-step machining process to promote a high degree of accuracy on the taper characteristic. We also designed and built semi-automated infeed mechanisms for our grinding machine specifically for this part, but engineered them to be adaptable for grinding similar components in the future. This hard chromed taper pin measures 1.250" OD x 6.915" in length. Constructed from 1045 alloy steel, accurate pre-sizing for induction heat treating and hard chrome plating enabled us to uphold ultra-close ±0005" tolerances with the taper held to within 15 minutes.


Impressed with our ability to uphold consistent quality standards, the client guaranteed us a three-year-plus program with an estimated annual volume of 15K units.
