CNC Machining of Adjuster Sleeves for the Automotive Industry

Problem:

The customer’s previous supplier did not consistently adhere to quality targets and missed delivery dates, which resulted in difficulties on the assembly line. Since the part aligned with our capabilities, they approached us to provide an expedited solution for supplying error-free parts that conformed to their quality standards.

Solution:

Our approach involved leveraging the features of a multi-axis, mill-turn capable CNC machining center equipped with an automatic bar loader for uninterrupted production. Along with developing simultaneous axis/spindle head machining techniques to accelerate cycle time, we programmed complex milling operations to achieve a specific assembly clamp and torque value to align with Tier 1 automotive manufacturer requirements. We used an internal mandrel clamping system on the sub-spindle to ensure no-damage fixturing and a high degree of machining precision. Quality assurance involved periodic inspection checks followed by dock audits and final certification.

Results

Manufactured from 1215 steel bar stock, this part featured dimensions of 1.456” (37 mm) OD x 3.445 ( 87.5 mm) in length and a high-performance electroless nickel plating. It incorporated dual male and female threads orientated with a double slot design, which we machined to ±.001” (±.025 mm) tolerances to prevent distortion and unintentional taper.

We ran production 24 hours per day to ensure all units shipped on time. Our efforts were rewarded with a long-term, minimum 7-year contract. We now provide cost-effective machining and finishing of 100K+ units annually.
